The idea to paint Orcas at Deception Pass resulted from a conversation I had back in 1995 with a woman who told me that the Southern Residents had just been seen crossing back to the Sound in Deception Pass.  In her opinion, which I have never had particular reason to doubt, this was a very rare thing as the Orcas were thought to be avoiding the east coast of Whidbey Island ever since the tragic capture operations of 1970 and 1971 that occurred there. I painted this painting through 1996, hurrying to finish the print for the 1996 Pacific Rim Wildlife Art Show which was then a major event of each year for me.

That was all before I dispensed with the Limited Edition art print and Orcas at Deception Pass was issued in 950 edition plus 95 Artist Proofs.

I’m down to I believe 26 left, mostly Artist Proofs. (There is absolutely no difference in the image between APs and the edition as in offset lithographed prints the AP is strictly for marketing purposes. In hand-pull Lithography, Artist Proofs can indeed be different from the run).

For over 20 years Orcas at Deception Pass was the flagship print at the store and a framed one still hangs on the wall at the store.
