397  Lucky Ride (Orcas & ferry)

Seeing Orcas from a ferry–any ferry–in WA state is indeed a rare & lucky event. Orcas, which weigh up to 20,000 pounds and can burst to 50 mph, are icons in the Northwest and southwest Canada. The “resident” whales here are likely genetically distinct from other populations of Orcas worldwide–& unlike most Orcas, are not known to eat mammals, relying on fish instead, with a preference for King Salmon. The peaks of the southern Olympics as seen from around Seattle are in the background.
