This painting  of a male Red-naped Sapsucker was begun in 2003 or 4–based on a note Ed made on the back of the Masonite–and first finished in 2006.  Ed did a couple more sessions on it in 2012 and had it photographed a last time then and framed with frame provided by Jayeness Moulding Company of Seattle.

The Red-naped Sapsucker is the Sapsucker species to be found on the Eastern slope of the Cascades and throughout the Rockies at lower elevations than the Williamson’s Sapsucker.  It’s not normally found in the lowland westside of WA such as Seattle, where it is replaced by the Red-breasted Sapsucker.  These birds don’t like to reveal themselves and they must contend with their burdensome name, but they really should be placed among the royalty of America’s glamour birds, and occasionally in the field you can get close enough to the right individual or individuals in the right setting to get figuratively knocked over.
