#439 Winter Goldeneyes, Poulsbo (12 x 16)
When I realized that one of the boats in the paintings is named “Tango,” I wanted to call this “Last Tango in Poulsbo,” but it was just too ridiculous. I began the painting using two Gadwall ducks as the subject, and was so excited I made a movie about the painting which is on you-tube but I don’t recommend it as I am long-winded. Eventually I decided, this was years ago, that the subject should be Barrow’s Goldeneye ducks, which were present at the original scene when we first photographed the marina in Poulsbo, was that 2011? I then repainted the Barrow’s Goldeneye bigger to fit with my eye’s understanding of the perspective. I am still attending to details as I painted this on a substrate that was too small for the ambitiousness of the painting. I have been urged to turn the green boat into another color, but I think I am fearful of straying too far from my reference shots and they show it about the crazy-green that it is in the painting and print. BTW, Barrow’s Goldeneye are delightful, beautiful diving ducks who grace Puget Sound shores in the winter, especially ferry docks such as at Winslow, WA. They nest in high mountain lakes.
