This is an ad that will run this Sunday October 6 in color in the Seattle Times.
The whole subject gripes me. If the people and culture of the United States understood what they seemed to know in their bones when I was a kid–that George Washington was our greatest President–we never would have had to be bothered by this threat to our country, and there has never been a greater one.
George Washington was great for precisely the reason that he was not Trump-like. In those days almost anyone who got near power became Trump-like, now it’s only about 50 or 60% around the world that go for Strongman rule–gut other branches of government, fill all positions with yes-men, bully and intimidate all enemies, interfere and destroy the electoral process, and use government for one’s own personal aggrandizement. The fact that George Washington could so easily have gone this route–and this was back in the 1700s–and yet didn’t is why he stands head and shoulders above so many leaders throughout the world then to now. And most all of the Presidential candidates through our history and including Kamala Harris, follow solidly in the democratic tradition that he created for this job.
Please vote Harris/Walz
Post Script: Recently it has come out in the news that Trump may have said “Who cares” when told Pence’s life was in danger. This is in keeping what is known about Trump’s actions on that day but not as bad as what we already absolutely knew: That Trump tweeted while Pence was still in danger. Trump’s tweet was to the effect that Pence had failed him, which is to day, Trump greenlighted the hanging of Mike Pence. As frustrated as I am with Trump, I am still more frustrated that Republican men seem to be made of jelly. Ted Cruz allowed his wife to be denigrated in front of the Nation by Trump when she was not running for any office but Ted never missed a beat being Trump’s Beta Boy. Pence was almost murdered by Trump and yet his political break with Trump has been tentative and not manly. (Yes, I know, I’m using thought-memes of the patriarchy here, like “manly,” but I think Republicans are trading in them and deserve to hoisted on their own pitard).
