The flagship painting at my store for about 30 years. Orca followers say the Southern Residents wouldn’t enter the Pass for years as it was the site of the horrible capture in 1971.  A woman stopped by my booth at a Fair and told me the residents had gone through in 1995, after I painted this painting, but it does seem like the Southern Residents have not returned to their practice of spending down time in Penn Cove as old-timers will tell you they used to. Meanwhile, the Bigg’s Orcas and other transients presumably have no memory of any of this and as I tell tourists, keep an eye out, any of the Orcas now could show up anywhere. The biggest problem ironically for the Southern Residents may be that we have deviated from the Native American strategy of waiting at the River mouths for the Orcas to return. That way boats working in Alaska can’t wipe out the Skagit River run of Chinook without knowing it or intending to. One way or another, all this makes this painting an emotional deal.
