This is Gig Harbor, WA, the mountain is Mt.Rainier and the bird is an adult male Merlin, so why is it called Jack of Diamonds? The English in days of old had two different names for males and females of falcons. The Peregrine was the female, larger and more powerful. The tiercel was the smaller male–thus the origin of the name Toyota Tercel. In the case of Merlin, that name was reserved for the larger female while males were called “Jacks.” Falconers still use these terms the same way they’ve been used for centuries. The “diamonds” are hypothetical. They are formed by the red triangular navigation signs combined with their reflections in the water.
