Mt. Erie is in the right-center of the background and Mt. Baker, though partially obscured by the Madrona branches, dominates the landscape along with Erie as it does in places in the San Juans. A WA state ferry is chugging in to port–I am intending that this is somewhere on Orcas Island, those who know the island may know a place like this or alternatively say there is no place like this–or certainly not exactly like this.  The Townsend’s Warbler in the Madrona tree is a good example of how some things are much easier for painters than photographers: Although it is passably common, it still would be difficult to be able to see one of these birds, or get an unobstructed photo of one, much less time it with a ferry and pose it with the mountains, .  Madronas, on the other hand, stand still and luckily are easy to find on Orcas Island, and according to one expert I talked to is the most useful tree for wildlife and Birds in western WA, although I’m sure others might counterpose the Garry Oak or the Black Cottonwood or other species.
