I did this painting probably in the early oughts after a boat trip in the San Juan islands that went pretty far north. Anyone familiar with the boundary waters might recognize the island that inspired the main distant island. The rest of the scene is assembled from other memories of that area, so there is no real place that looks precisely like this. An Orca pod is in the SE quadrant of the painting. (This was originally issued as a smaller print that was called “Rounding the Point.” I could never square the island on the right with being a “Point,” so even though the name sounded wonderful to me, I eventually decided it wasn’t accurately descriptive and adopted the new title while remastering and re-sizing the print.)
