This painting of a Kestrel is intended to be somewhere in Washington’s still-rural-feeling Westside, places like the achingly beautiful Snoqualmie Valley in the Carnation area. Having lived in a place where Kestrels were present in my youth but gradually disappeared (Pennsylvania), I never take the presence of this beautiful, graceful Falcon for granted. But at the moment I published this print– late January 2024, you should still be able to find Kestrels in the valley, and we are coming back from a trip to Gray’s Harbor County, equally beautiful, where we found 3 and other birders have found 8 Kestrels wintering (Brady Loop).
The bird I painted is a male with it’s brilliant color pattern. Females are larger and beautiful in their way and I have painted a pair in the past. The Barn that I used as ref is or was just east of Monroe on Hwy 2.
