This painting was based on the view from the Dept. of Wildlife lands where the North Fork of the Skagit River meets, is it Port Susan Bay (?) in the Mt. Vernon, Skagit delta area of Washington state. The little round island has a name which I always forget but it is a seriously cute island. Delia and I have been there many times, and in season we always hope to see a Short-eared Owl or four flying over the marsh, picking fights with other Short-eared Owls, Northern Harriers and maybe Red-tailed Hawks, Rough-legged Hawks or Bald Eagles, or giving them a wide berth. Their lives aren’t the easiest, they do it their way and they grace the land in a way that makes it all breathtakingly beautiful.
