Frequent visitors to the Nisqually Wildlife Refuge near Olympia might well not recognized this hawk as a frequent sight at the Refuge. At the far northern fringe of it’s range, Red-shouldered Hawks are rare but one resided in the general vicinity of Twin Barns through the fall and winter of 2019. It had been observed off and on there also since at least the 1970s. Whether this bird is making a push north or whether the northern extent of its range simply fluctuates is not known by me. Red-shouldered Hawks is one of the more lightly-built members of the Buteo family, which includes the abundant Red-tailed Hawk. It tends to do quite a bit of perch-hunting and has an enchanting, tropical-sounding loud call “Keeyuur, Keeyuur, Keeyuur, etc.”
