This painting from 1988 was from reference photos (I paint freehand but rely heavily on reference photos) taken by my Father-in-law on a trip to the Shetland Islands, are they Denmark or Scotland, I think the latter. But they are evocative of the scenes from coastal Alaska although the bird species are different but similar. Puffins, in fact most Alcids, don’t get to take it easy and rest very often. Puffins can dive 200 ft. down and usually fly many miles, 20 isn’t uncommon as I recall, to get back to deliver a load of fish to the kids. Here they are socializing and more-or-less resting on a nice flat-topped rock that I call “Alcid Hangout.”
