Published January of 2024. An Anna’s Hummingbird male in snow-covered Birch leaves. Hummingbirds coexisting with short-duration snow-cover is perhaps a phenomenon that has only occurred in recent times in this region. The nonmigratory Anna’s is a new arrival, having expanded into the Seattle area beginning around 1975. (When I arrived in Seattle in 1976 my friend Doug Wechsler told me to watch for Anna’s Hummingbirds in Discovery Park, saying “Some have been seen there.”) Since then Anna’s has pushed far into British Columbia.
