- The original of this painting from the 90s is basement-flood-damaged from a Pineapple storm in the last 30 years. I did a little work on it with a brush and a little more on the computer in 2025 and am bringing it out in many sizes that it has never been printed in before. Seals and Sea Lions as a group share an uncanny similarity with Dogs and indeed, when I first read about the taxonomy of Mammals they were still classed in the same order, Carnivora, as cats and dogs. If you spend time in the Salish Sea you might have a story of a Seal hanging around as if it is interested in what you are doing. Once when Delia and I were out birding we met a woman who had had a woman-friend who had gotten into trouble in a kayak trying to cross from Anderson Island to Luhr Beach in the South Sound. With the waves whipping up, her shoulder flaring up in pain, and the wind getting cold, she feared she wouldn’t make it. Then a Harbor Seal appeared by her side, just a foot or two from the kayak, and stayed with her as if to give her encouragement. It made the difference, she thought, as the Seal escorted her the entire way to the Beach.
