This is a painting I began in 2025. I struggle with the question of whether Birds in flight can be painted, at least by me. I even have wondered that though when I look at the paintings of Bruno Liljefors, who is to me the most impressive realist (whatever that means) wildlife artist to this point. His Golden Eagle flying to catch a Hare painting and his Eiders in flight paintings don’t work for me. Paint really cements the bird into a stillness that photography doesn’t seem to. Photographs of birds in flight are fine. I will keep trying to make this work.
