This is a painting I did in 1989 that I, as usual, have kept working on. There was something I saw when I was painting it that I thought I lost and it lost in it’s early printings. I added another Common Tern a couple of years ago (I’m writing on July 25, 2023) and moved a couple months ago (this is in photoshop now, the painting was sold years ago). I have now moved it further behind the closest Tern and this for me was a Eureka type thing because now the three birds are spatially related and form a part of an S-curve. Plus I’ve been dinking with the color balance and had it too red, this edition has been calmed down in that way. I am, after 34 years, finally thrilled. Common Terns used to be–this is an old story and a sad one, fairly common on the Pacific Coast in spring and fall but are now a very rare sight, welcome to the Brave New World. The lighthouse is Heceta, which is on the Oregon Coast and I’ve heard some people say the visual from here is the most reproduced in America, but I’m sure that involved some conjecture and boosterism. I may have heard someone say that about Mt. Shuksan in Whatcom County from Artist’s point.
