This is a 2023 rework of a painting of a male Anna’s Hummingbird in the snow I originally painted in 2013. The Greater Northwest, by which I mean Washington, Oregon, Southwestern British Columbia and Northern California, in the current period–1977 to the present–is unusual in history and geography in that it is home to the rare phenomenon of Hummingbirds coexisting with snow. The expansion of the Anna’s into the potential-snow zone at the end of the 20th century is what prompted this unlikely pairing. The pioneer Anna’s of the 1970s and early 80’s survived deep freezes and snow on their own, now however at least some of these Hummers get help from humans who struggle to keep their hummingbird feeders from freezing over.
