Two Orcas surface in front of a rock outcropping in the Salish Sea. A Bonaparte’s Gull flies over the two Whales. On the rock is a gathering of Black Oystercatchers, with two Pelagic Cormorants and a Short-billed Gull, which was called a Mew Gull when I began this painting. In the distance are the Olympics.
Is this a real place? No, but it’s not exactly fantasy. The rock is somewhere in the archipelago south of Lopez and/or San Juan Island (I have photos of it of course) and the Olympics are often in view but they don’t look quite that close aren’t behind that particular rock outcropping.
