• We were on a ridge north of the Yakima Basin when we saw a male Calliope Hummingbird about 50 yards away, returning to a post at regular intervals the way Hummingbirds do.  I got a distant photo of the Bird as the sunlight streaked into the opening it was guarding and controlling.  The photo I got was quite distant, so I had to add closer photos from Books and other photographers to fill in some details, but I tried to stay very faithful to the way this particular Birds gorget-streamers arranged on its face, which had been breathtaking through the viewfinder and which could be seen in the photo.

Calliopes have been relatively common in the riparian areas of the higher portions of the eastern slope of the Cascades and in North-Central Washington as well in the years I have been here.
