- The Hermit Warbler is generally a high-canopy-forager in big Fir Forests of the mountainous far-West, from California’s Sierras to the Cascades of Oregon and Washington with the north end of its range being perhaps Thurston County’s Black Hills. It is not known for flying out of the woods or appearing in the open. But in the summer of 2024 Delia located a male Hermit Warbler foraging for insects in an open 7 10-year old clearcut on a high ridge above the Cowlitz River, with the nearly flat-top of Mt. St. Helens in the background. The Bird soon winged it’s way up and above us on its way to the big timber that was across the road. It all happened so fast that I did not come close to getting a photo but the sight left an indelible impression. A photo helped here as I was able to get a photo of the explosion of color in the clearcut provided by Senecio yellow Flowers, White Daisies and the bright green leaves and dazzling red berries of Western Red Elderberry. This is one of wildlife art’s reasons for being. It was such an emotional moment, as I love this Bird, and I was able to re-imagine and reconstruct the scene through painting.
