Fifteen years after painting this painting I decided to repaint the sky from yellow to blue. It wasn’t that I didn’t like the old one, I still do. It’s that I need the Space Needle to be a workhorse at the store–the Space Needle, like it or not, and I do, has become the preeminent symbol of Seattle and I need to have it in more than only one dominant color.  I need a Space Needle that symbolizes the other Seattle, with clouds, the one that I’m hoping can endure into the future.  I had a blast reworking the color while leaving the city exactly the same.  Also, I could have chosen to paint a whole new painting but I’m almost 74 and that’s four months I need for other projects–and that’s assuming I could make it work.
