90 Common Mergansers

The white, black and green bird is the male, the gray, red and white bird is the female. These are the fastest ducks (I’ve heard) and have been clocked at 72 mph. They look athletic swimming and in the air, where they can whiz overhead in tight formations like jet planes. I dislike the name “Common” for any critter, because it’s a commentary on an ecosystem in a certain place and time and is not intrinsically descriptive of the animal.
