#2 White Shark

White Sharks are astonishing creatures that defy belief. They are essentially warm-blooded, with a complex of blood vessels behind the brain to help with mental function. My only regret about this painting is it conveys neither their size nor their athleticism as well as it should. Some of the recent photos taken of this species off South Africa will do that however, especially when you realize that the little brown thing in the mouth of one of these giants that is completely airborne and 15 feet aloft is a 350 lb. Sea Lion. Like most of the great fish of the sea, large individuals are usually if not always females. (Successful males apparently change gender on their own when they reach 1000 lbs.) Fishermen & movie directors don’t tell you this stuff, that’s why wildlife artists have to.
