Pacific White-sided Dolphins. These speedy acrobatic swimmers don’t often or even ever (never say never) come into the Salish Sea–that is the inland waters of Western Washington and Southern British Columbia–but I’ve seen them on birdwatching pelagic tours out of Westport into the ocean. They are Lagenhorhynchus genus dolphins–they have 6 other closely related cousin species distributed over the oceans including the speedy Atlantic White-sided Dolphin that I’ve heard can sometimes be seen off Massachusetts, and the Dusky Dolphin of the South Pacific that is included in my “Athletes of the Sea” poster because it can jump 17 feet above the surface looking for clusters of seabirds. At the store I’ve met folks who swam with Pac. white-sided Dolphins on the north end of Vancouver Island and say they are quite friendly, just like Bottlenose Dolphins.
