When I initially painted the painting–back in the teens sometime or maybe the oughts?– I thought I knew where this was and called it Fort Worden White-crown. Kindly people from Port Townsend illuminated the fact that this is the Point Wilson Lighthouse, however, as it is not on the Fort Worden State Park property. I remastered the painting, it’s been a long process with work continuing now through July 2025. The bird is a White-crowned Sparrow, which is notable as being one of the most capably urban native birds in the Northwest. I hear them singing at Westlake Mall. They like rock outcroppings in the high mountains with sparse vegetation such as spruce and fir to nest in. Parking lots and streets now stand in for rock outcroppings and urban plantings for the spruce and fir. It has a delightful song that is a little bit minor key, and recently made it into a Brandi Carlisle song.
