As of early 2024, Kestrels still grace our state with their beautiful presence. This needs to be celebrated. This incredible bird has suffered mightily throughout the country. In many places it can’t deal with the overabundance of manicured lawn or the hordes of predators, competitors and harassers that come with suburbanization and land development, including the Crows. When I arrived in Seattle in the 70s, you could always find a Kestrel family making a go of things at Interbay, but that traditional site is long gone and now a Kestrel sighting in Seattle is reason to do a jig, which I did yesterday when I saw one hunting from a power pole on Airport Way south of town, that was 3/20/2024.
