I painted White Sky over the Point in 1986 right after a trip to Shi Shi Beach during which we walked up the beach to the Point of Arches. I have long been disturbed by the lukewarm response to this painting (a big Thank You to anyone who owns it!). That’s partly because I have always thought it was one of my best paintings. For several years now, working on the computer, I’ve been trying to see if I can repaint problem areas so as to see if the problem is intrinsic to the conception of the painting or if some of it is reducible to technical issues. An argument against the concept is I’m using a blue subject that is intentionally not emphasized by the composition. Blue is a very cold color, the symbol of cold actually, so by nature it will rarely “pop.” That’s just the way Harlequin Ducks want it, they have enemies all up and down the coast (including Humans who still allow a hunting season on this Duck with a somewhat tenuous hold on life). Thus the only way to get the Ducks to pop is through the technical work, making sure that their edges are lighter than their body, and making sure that any color on them is as bright as it can be. So this is the Next generation White Sky, hardly discernably different from the old one, even though that camouflages a fair amount of work that has been done on it.
